What Are Common Dental Emergencies?

Unfortunately, dental emergencies can occur unexpectedly at any time, and we can’t always avoid accidents that cause damage to teeth, lips and/or gums. A dental emergency may include a toothache or an accident which involves your teeth or mouth. Below is some information on what to do for some common dental emergencies, as prompt action can often minimise the repercussions!

1

Treating knocked out teeth

If your adult (permanent) tooth is knocked out, it may be able to besaved. If it is a baby tooth, simply farewell it to the tooth fairy! Baby teeth are usually not replaced as you may sustain damage to the adult tooth as a result.
Time is the essence and immediate actions need to be taken. Try to locate the adult tooth as soon as possible, picking it up by the crown (top of the tooth) and not the tooth roots.
If the tooth is clean, place it straight back in its socket (hole). If the tooth is dirty, wash it for a few seconds in milk and place it back in its socket. If you can’t replace the tooth, place it in a glass of milk. Do not rinse or immerse the tooth with water, and get your child to the dentist immediately with the tooth.
2

Facial Or Gum Swelling

Swelling that affects not only the cheeks, but also the gums can indicate an underlying dental problem. Common causes of swollen gums and cheeks can include a range of dental issues, so seeing a dentist urgently would be highly recommended.

3

Pain Or Sensitivity

Tooth sensitivity, or “dentin hypersensitivity,” is exactly what it sounds like: pain or discomfort in the teeth as a response to certain stimuli. You may also experience pain or sensitivity to your head and neck region. It may be temporary or a chronic problem, and it can affect one tooth, several teeth, or all the teeth in a single individual.

4

Toothache

A toothache can be caused by a number of reasons including; infection, cracked tooth, cavity or a leaky filling. This may also escalate and cause pain around your jaw area and cause your gum around the tooth to become red and puffy, causing nasty taste or/and a bad breath.

5

Infected or impacted Wisdom Teeth

An impacted wisdom tooth may not grow through your gums correctly. It may partially emerge, grow in at an angle, or develop completely sideways. It also often has a higher risk of infection, as several kinds of bacteria can cause an infection in and around a wisdom tooth.

6

If a tooth is or broken with trauma

Occasionally, the dentist is able to “glue” the tooth fragment back into place and re-attach the broken tooth back to the existing tooth structure. Find the tooth fragment as soon as possible, and place it into milk. Make an appointment with one of our dentist immediately and bring the broken tooth with you to the appointment.

7

Children’s first aid (without permanent teeth)

Wash any wound with clean running water. Stop bleeding by placing pressure to the injured area with gauze or cotton wool for 5 minutes. Contact your dentist immediately. Please note that lost baby teeth are generally not replaced as this may cause damage to the adult teeth.
